AV Access Skills Program

Program Details

The evolving field of Hemodialysis Access requires professionals to have an in-depth understanding of the various intricacies surrounding the AV circuit. BD Peripheral Intervention presents course participants with a practical and immersive educational experience that provides the opportunity to learn comprehensive management strategy related to vascular access disease and its complications. Attendees have the opportunity to observe live case demonstrations while engaging in thoughtful discussion with experienced specialists. Hands-on simulators offer participants an opportunity to improve Stent-Graft placement technique and accuracy.

Intended Audience:

Interventional Radiologists, Vascular Surgeons, Interventional Cardiologists, Interventional Nephrologists and Allied Health Professionals.

  • AV Access Angiographic Evaluation and Treatment (Fistulagrams)
  • Percutaneous Thromectomy Procedures (Declots)
  • Utilization of FLUENCY™ and COVERA™ Stent-Graft Technology within the AV Circuit
  • Utilization of High Pressure Non-Compliant Conquest Balloon for Anastamotic and Venous Stenosis
  • Management of Difficult AV-Access

Dr. Richard DeMasi

Dr. DeMasi earned his medical degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 1986. Undergraduate degree was in chemistry at the University of Florida (1982). He completed residency in general surgery at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina (1992) and vascular fellowship at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia (1995). Areas of interest include minimally invasive management of carotid disease as well as PAD and aneurysm disease. Vascular Access comprises a significant portion of practice and clinical research. He has co-authored and published numerous peer reviewed articles and has presented papers to many surgical societies.

Dr. DeMasi has been president of the medical staff at DePaul Medical Center in Norfolk, Virginia and president of the medical staff at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. His current position is Clinical Chief Vascular Surgery, Medical Director Vascular Service Line. He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and is a recipient of the clinical faculty award for teaching at Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Dr. Samuel Steerman

Dr. Steerman earned his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA, in 2006 after receiving his bachelor's degree at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. He completed his general surgery residency at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA, in 2011 and his vascular surgery fellowship at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA, in 2013.

As a member of Sentara Vascular Specialists, Dr. Steerman has a special interest in the surgical and endovascular management of peripheral vascular occlusive disease and comprehensive management of dialysis access. Besides surgical creation and maintenance of hemodialysis access, he provides minimally invasive options for many patients living with end stage renal disease.

As a published author, he has written and presented on vascular diseases at numerous medical conferences across the United States. He is also the winner of the 2012 SCVS Top Gun award, a competition based on surgical skills and performance. Dr. Steerman is certified by the American Board of Surgery, an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School, a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
